The 2025 federal election is done and dusted… but for many Australians with disability, the big question still stands… what now?
Before the election, a lot of people shared the same feeling… like they were stuck in limbo.
With so many decisions affecting housing, healthcare, jobs, and transport, it’s not just about getting through the day. It’s about knowing there’s a real plan in place and that someone’s listening.
So, what’s been promised?
There’s some movement. The new government has committed to action, and the 2025 budget includes:
- $432.8 million for disability support
- $364.5 million to help unpaid carers and people with disability
- $1.8 billion in energy bill relief (which includes households with disability)
- A 45% boost to rent assistance

They’ve also promised to start acting on the Disability Royal Commission’s recommendations. That’s good news, but the key will be in the follow-through.
It’s not just about funding.
The NDIS only supports around 11% of Australians with disability. For everyone else, there’s still a huge gap. What people are asking for is simple: more clarity, more access, and more say in the decisions being made.
It’s about being part of the conversation… not just being talked about.
What needs to happen next?
To move from promises to progress, people with disability need a seat at the table. That means co-designing services, being part of policy-making, and making sure decisions actually reflect what’s needed on the ground.
Because when plans are made without the people they affect, they rarely hit the mark.
The bottom line?
It’s clear that people with disability want more than promises… they want real clarity on how future policy will support their goals, needs, and quality of life.
The election may be over, but the conversation can’t stop here.
