International Day of People with Disability 2024: Leading Change on the Sunshine Coast

December 3, 2024 marks International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a United Nations day that brings attention to the 5.5 million Australians living with disability. That’s 1 in 5 people in our community.

The theme for 2024 is Leadership and Inclusion.

This year’s theme puts the spotlight on leadership by people with disability as we work toward an inclusive and sustainable future. Here on the Sunshine Coast, we see this leadership in action every day.

Local Leaders Making a Difference.

  • Business owners creating accessible workplaces
  • Community advocates improving local services
  • Support workers bringing expertise to care
  • Volunteers making events more inclusive

The Numbers Tell a Story.

Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that while 56% of people with disability aged 15-64 are employed, challenges remain. One in ten people with disability face discrimination, showing why leadership and advocacy matter. (source: idpwd-info.pdf).
