The NDIS Commission has announced mandatory registration requirements for Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers. This change is designed to strengthen quality, oversight and participant safety across the NDIS.

If you receive SIL supports, have a family member in SIL, or are considering Supported Independent Living as part of your NDIS plan, it’s important to understand what this means.

You can read the official announcement from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission here.

What Is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living is funded support that helps people with disability live as independently as possible, usually in a shared home setting.

SIL funding typically covers:

  • Personal care support
  • Help with daily tasks
  • Overnight support
  • Assistance with building independent living skills

SIL does not cover rent or everyday living expenses. It funds the support staff required to assist participants in their home.

If you are new to NDIS housing supports, you can explore our NDIS Supports page for more information about available supports.

What Does Mandatory Registration Mean?

Mandatory registration means that providers delivering Supported Independent Living supports must be registered with the NDIS Commission.

Previously, some SIL providers could operate unregistered when supporting self-managed or plan-managed participants. Under the new requirements, SIL providers will need to meet formal registration standards.

This includes:

  • Meeting strict quality and safeguarding requirements
  • Undergoing audits
  • Complying with NDIS Practice Standards
  • Being accountable to the NDIS Commission

Why Has This Change Been Introduced?

The change has been introduced to strengthen participant protection and improve consistency across SIL services.

The NDIS Commission’s role is to regulate providers and protect participants. You can learn more about their role on the NDIS Commission website.

Mandatory registration aims to:

  • Improve safety in shared living environments
  • Increase oversight of providers
  • Ensure consistent service standards
  • Reduce risk of poor-quality or unsafe services

What Does This Mean for Participants?

If you are receiving Supported Independent Living supports, the key impact is that your provider must meet registration requirements.

This may mean:

  • Your provider completes a registration process if not already registered
  • Additional compliance checks
  • Greater oversight and accountability

For participants, this is largely about improved safeguards and quality assurance.

If you are unsure about your current arrangements, it’s worth discussing this with your provider or support coordinator.

Does This Affect Other NDIS Supports?

Mandatory registration currently applies specifically to Supported Independent Living providers.

Other NDIS supports may have different registration requirements depending on the type of service delivered and how funding is managed.

The NDIS system can feel complex, especially when regulatory changes are introduced. That’s why working with a provider who understands compliance and participant rights matters.

How to Stay Informed

NDIS policies and regulatory settings do evolve. The best way to stay informed is to:

  • Check updates from the NDIS Commission
  • Speak with your support coordinator
  • Ask your provider about their registration status

Choosing a Provider You Can Trust

Registration is one part of the picture. Quality support also comes down to transparency, communication and genuine care.

When choosing a Supported Independent Living provider, consider:

  • Clear service agreements
  • Transparent pricing
  • Open communication
  • Respect for participant choice and control

Understanding these changes helps you make informed decisions about your NDIS supports.

Together, we can make a difference.
