Understanding the Latest NDIS Legislation Changes
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has recently updated its legislation, effective from 3 October 2024. Here’s a quick rundown of the key changes and what they mean for participants.
What’s New?
Approved Supports:
NDIS funds are now strictly for approved items listed in the new support categories.
Replacement Rules:
Participants may substitute non-approved items in certain cases if necessary.
Plan Adjustments:
New plans will show total budget and funding component amounts, and plan management types may be adjusted for participants needing assistance with fund management.
Updated Guidelines:
To support these changes, the NDIS has refreshed its guidelines, including details on:• Applying and leaving the NDIS• Creating, managing, and adjusting plans• Defining “reasonable and necessary” supports
Community Consultation:
The NDIS worked with the community to shape these updates, gathering feedback from over 7,000 Australians in August 2024. This input helped refine the support lists and establish transitional rules.
